How to Verify a Fire Protection Vendor in North Carolina

This is an unusual thing for a fire protection company to publish, but it is genuinely useful information and very little of it is written down anywhere.

North Carolina does not currently maintain a statewide license specifically for portable fire extinguisher servicing. Requirements are set locally, which means the answer to "is this company legitimate" varies depending on which jurisdiction your building sits in.

What that means in practice

Because there is no single state license to look up, some jurisdictions handle it themselves. A number of North Carolina municipalities require companies servicing fire extinguishers and kitchen suppression systems to register with the local fire department before tagging equipment, and issue penalties for non-compliant tagging.

So the first question is not "are they licensed by the state" — it is "are they registered where my building is." Your local fire marshal’s office can tell you whether registration is required in your jurisdiction, and often whether a given company holds it.

What to ask any vendor

  1. Are you registered with the fire department in the jurisdiction where my building is, if that is required there?
  2. What manufacturer training and certifications does the technician who will be on site hold?
  3. Are you insured, and can you send a certificate?
  4. What documentation will I receive after the service?
  5. For sprinkler work: are you licensed by the NC Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors?

That last one is the clearest line in North Carolina. Fire sprinkler work does require state licensure, so a company offering sprinkler inspection should be able to produce a license number without hesitation.

Warning signs

  • Unsolicited door-to-door "inspections" with immediate pressure to sign
  • Tags applied without the unit being opened, weighed, or meaningfully examined
  • No documentation left behind
  • Reluctance to answer where they are registered or what they are certified on
  • Quotes for replacing every unit in the building on a first visit
  • Invoices for work you cannot match to specific equipment

A legitimate company will not mind these questions. We would rather you ask them of us than not ask them of somebody else.

One thing worth asking about specifically: training from a state that does licence this work. Florida, for example, requires the certification course for portable extinguisher permits to be completed at the Florida State Fire College or another approved facility. A technician who has been through a programme like that has a verifiable credential, which is useful precisely because North Carolina does not currently issue one.

Common questions

Does North Carolina license fire extinguisher servicing companies?

Not through a single statewide license at present. Requirements are set locally, and some jurisdictions require registration with the local fire department. Fire sprinkler contracting is separately licensed at the state level. Confirm current requirements with the Office of the State Fire Marshal and your local fire marshal.

Which fire code applies to my building?

North Carolina enforces the NC Fire Prevention Code, adopted from the International Fire Code with state amendments. Editions update on a multi-year cycle, so confirm the current edition with the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
